Play Nimbus Development Update – Project Asteroid

Happy Friday everyone! Hope that everyone is doing great, and those of you from America reading, are getting ready for another fantastic Thanksgiving come next week. However, next week has yet to arrive, so I’m here to bring you another update on what has been going on!

The Start of a Game Development Team

In the past week, a lot of brand things happened around the ‘office’ (not really an office, more like our dorm rooms!) in terms of game development and  the overall development of ourselves as an established team in the indie development scene. As a team this past week, we’ve done a lot. We’ve gotten our official website launched (which you’re reading this post on right now!) and started all the nitty gritty stuff to get ourselves 100% official as a company.

There are still a lot of things we have to do on the business side to get things fully established, but we are getting there, and we are very excited about this!

Developing towards our prototype

As you probably have noticed, on our home page we have listed Project Asteroid, which is what we are calling our project for the moment. We still aren’t saying what we’re making just yet, but we’ve done a lot this week to push us forward and closer to our goal. Adam, our lead programmer on the engine, has been adding a lot that is making our development process much, much easier and will allow a lot of things to be done in the coming weeks.

We have a fully working level system built with tags which allow us to create our levels straight from a file edited outside of code, and the same goes for all characters, etc. This not only means we can quickly execute and build new features for the game, but it also means that we can create tools to assist us with the process and push as much content into the game as possible.

In addition, we have the basics of AI and our menu system being built. We also implemented a few nifty looking features to make transitioning between menus clean, and fresh. Just looking at the whiteboard of things to do though, there was so much that Adam has crossed off and completed in this week it not only surprised myself, but him too!

Documents, documents, documents

No, this isn’t another “Steve Ballmer Moment,” but we have finished the first draft for our overall game development document for our small little project. It’s crazy to see how much is written about the game and how much work needs to be done for us to meet the goals presented in the document. It only makes me wonder what documents for AAA games such as Bioshock, Halo, etc. look like.

It’s very crazy, and to think this is only the first draft and there’s much for us to work on.

Video Game Music Production

Slowly we’ve been working on setting an overal theme for the sound and music in our project. It was only a few weeks ago where “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” by The Smashing Pumpkins might have set some sort of initial theme for the game. The track came on during one of our little meetings we have and there was something about it that made me get a base. You might have seen a few shots earlier of the drum line track, and it was inspired highly by that track.

There are a few other tracks which I’m using to set the mood for this track and a few other tracks. More on those will be coming soon. Yes, I know how much we say ‘soon’ but it’s better than saying it’s never coming. ;)

Art – We Want You!

Yes, we are looking for a 2D Artist to join the team here at Play Nimbus. Currently, the duties include drawing concept art and creating well detailed sprites to be used in our game. Currently, we aren’t paying up front, but will be splitting revenue with those who have worked on the game. It’s great to do to get experience in the game’s industry and would be great for your portfolio. If you’re interested, be sure to go to our jobs page and apply.

If you aren’t an artist, feel free to apply, we may be looking for those in other fields soon!

A Weekend of Games Development

Before we wrap up this weekend, I thought it’d be great to let everyone know that, this weekend, Play Nimbus along with a bunch of other game developers on Campus will be getting together to work on our game projects and just have a good time. This does mean we will be working overtime this weekend on our game, which awesome! This means there might be additional posts come this weekend, along with possible pictures that will not make any sense except to those who know the project. ;)

Up Up and Away

That’s it for this week. We’ll have more to share soon. Yes, I know I said soon again. Shush. Like I said, soon is better than never.

Until then, be sure to stay up to date with us on Twitter, Facebook and our website here.
